Frogs at Perth Zoo

Perth Zoo keeps several frog species and in 2004 bred the Slender Tree Frog and documented its growth and development. This is a common WA species but it was the first time that the captive breeding husbandry and growth and development of this species has been studied.

Perth Zoo has recently established a Reproductive Biology Unit (RBU) which is now fully equipped and operational. The RBU has the capacity to freeze and store gametes and embryos of threatened species, including amphibian species such as frogs. Expertise is available to carry out studies on the morphology of the reproductive tract of frogs (of which little is known), investigate mechanisms of sperm storage and assess the viability of sperm.

Perth Zoo keeps a number of species of frogs in different locations around the Zoo.
