Community Service Program
For Years 10 and 11
As part of the Department of Education and Training Community Service Program, Perth Zoo has two exciting opportunities for your secondary students to take part in: School Fodder Garden Program and Wildlife Conservation Action.
These programs have been developed in response to many requests for on-site work experience and volunteering opportunities at Perth Zoo. Unfortunately Perth Zoo is unable to accommodate on-site work experience for secondary school students.
Teacher Workshop – Fodder and Fundraising
Tuesday 2 December 2008
Join the Perth Zoo team to learn more about these Community Service programs for students.
This informative session will take participants on a guided tour through the Zoo to find about how and who uses fodder, visit some of the animals benefiting from fundraising activities and hear from teachers who have made these programs a reality in their schools.

School Fodder Garden Program
Your school can help Perth Zoo by growing fodder and browse crops for our plant-eating residents. We can assist you with information on getting started, selecting the right plants and harvesting for use at Perth Zoo.
There are many ways your school can help Perth Zoo meet our fodder needs. You might like to consider establishing a designated fodder garden in your school, integrating fodder species into your school environment or partnering with a primary school/local council/vacant land holder to create a fodder source. Each school can tailor their fodder project according to their needs. The program could be run across the whole school or in small groups (eg special interest groups or curriculum programs).
Creating fodder gardens can be integrated across the curriculum or work as a stand-alone program. Furthermore, the program could be led by teachers, school gardeners, parents, volunteers or the kids.

Wildlife Conservation Action
Get in on the action and raise money to help save threatened wildlife. Perth Zoo established Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA) to support the conservation of species in the wild. The Zoo covers all administration costs so 100% of all donations go toward conservation projects including habitat protection, anti-poaching patrol units, community education, wildlife monitoring and research into threatened species.
Aside from raising funds to support vital on-the-ground conservation work, your school’s involvement in Wildlife Conservation Action will also increase awareness of conservation and environmental issues. Each school can tailor their fundraising according to their needs. The program could be run across the whole school or in small groups (eg special interest groups or curriculum programs). It could be run as a short- or long-term project. Fundraising for WCA can be integrated across the curriculum or work as a standalone program.
